Clearwater, Fla. – (September 15, 2016) – Russ Kimball, general manager of the Sheraton Sand Key Resort, announced today they will host the newly formed International Beach Games, taking place September 23-25, 2016.
After many successful years of hosting its own Sand Key Sports Festival with Beach Tennis, and recently Ultimate Frisbee, Sheraton Sand Key Resort collaborated with the Florida Sports Foundation and the Visit St. Pete Clearwater Sports Commission to brand a larger and more global event to include Beach Handball, Ultimate Frisbee, Powerlifting and Super Weight Throw and Beach Tennis.
The event is now part of the statewide Sunshine State Games, organized by the Florida Sport Foundation, which brings athletes from all over the state to compete in an Olympic-style tournament.
“We are very excited to partner with the Florida Sports Foundation and provide a venue for the athletes to participate in their chosen sport. We look forward to a fun weekend for all involved and hope they enjoy themselves in Florida,” Kimball said.
The games are expected to draw approximately 600 athletes from various parts of the United States and the rest of the world. Powerlifting is a sanctioned USA Powerlifting event, Super Weight Throw is a USA Track & Field event and the Florida Association State Championships. Beach Handball is conducted by USA Team Handball.
Senior Vice President of the Florida Sports Foundation Stephen V. Rodriguez, said, “For over 35 years, the Sunshine State Games have been offering amateur sport competitive opportunities to Floridians. We are happy to be adding the International Beach Games to our line-up of over 30 sports and 10,000 athletes that compete annually in the Sunshine State Games.”
During the three-day tournament, athletes will be able to intermingle with each other on and off the beach, including a Saturday evening buffet hosted by The Sheraton Sand Key Resort.
Pinellas County Sports Commissioner Kevin Smith said, “We see this event as a great way to bring in athletes from different parts of Florida, the US and abroad to visit and enjoy the beautiful Sand Key Beach and all the things Pinellas County has to offer. It’s important we continue to attract athletes to Pinellas County, and what better way than to host them on our biggest and best beach at the Sheraton Sand Key Resort.”
